Enhance Your Prosperity Gua for Good Fortune

spring-flowers-2007-009-2

The energy of upcoming new moon on Saturday, April 21, relates to prosperity and abundance. Refresh the back left sector of your land, home, work space and every room prior to Saturday to get things flowing for you, particularly if they were slow or stalled over the winter months. On Saturday, plant seeds of intention for prosperity and abundance. Two weeks later, tune into what is happening beginning with the May 5 full moon.

New moons are about new beginnings. According to Simone Butler, new moons in Taurus and Scorpio correlate with the Wealth and Abundance gua. The energy of this space is about the blessings in life, being open to receiving, and giving freely to others. When you express gratitude and appreciation for all you have, a stream of energy brings more your way. The opposite also happens. If you are focused on what you don’t have or what is missing, you experience more lack. Each of us strengthens the object of our attention.

Clear, clean, enhance, or energize the Prosperity area of your home or workspace to:

  • be more generous
  • recognize more blessings
  • attract more money or increase cash flow
  • expand or increase abundance in your life
  • experience more good luck or good fortune
  • alleviate problems with your hips, buttocks, thighs, legs
  • correct trouble with connective tissue, lungs or breathing
  • eliminate gall bladder or intestinal ailments
  • improve your relationship with your eldest daughter

Enhance the Prosperity area of your home or office using objects that represent Wood or Water energy. These include the colors green or  along with purple, a little red or gold; tall items, column and rectangle shapes and stripes; things that remind you of treasure, prosperity, abundance; green plants such as bamboo, jade, philodendron; fresh flowers; something that moves; things for which you are grateful; a water feature, moving water, pictures of water; a crystal. Be creative and place things here that you genuinely love.

What shape is this area of your house or office in? Is it clean and orderly? Perhaps it’s dusty and worn down. It’s very important that your plumbing and electrical systems are in top order. Fix anything requiring maintenance and remove all clutter. Clutter is stuck energy. It blocks the flow of prosperity and money. Leaky plumbing and electrical problems drain your bank account and short circuit your efforts.

The energy of your space reflects the patterns in your life. Repair anything requiring attention, adjust your attitude, and visualize your desired outcome. You may be delighted by how quickly things shift for you.

Tune into  the blessings in your life. They may begin to show up more frequently and in ways you didn’t even anticipate. Play with these ideas and have some fun. They won’t hurt and they certainly may help.

I’d love to hear any comments you have about the shifts you make and what happens as a result.

Create Opportunities for Business Growth

Business Lobby

Create a Welcoming Business Entrance

Have you ever walked into an office that radiates success? Businesses, like people, have a personality and energy that is uniquely their own. Employees often spend more time at work than at home. For that reason, management that acknowledges the key role that a good work environment plays in productivity, problem solving, employee retention, and in ultimately improving the bottom line, has much to gain.

The Career and Opportunities area of the feng shui bagua relates to creating opportunities for your business as well as your employees. Energetically this sector also relates to listening and communication skills. This is the center front area of all of your business spaces: the land, the building and every room in the building. Balance or energize this area for:

  • Improving market position
  • Setting a new direction or journey
  • Attracting qualified new employees
  • Creating clearly defined business and marketing plans
  • Clarifying your business’s journey or position in the market
  • Providing appropriate and relevant career options for your employees.

Here’s a quick checklist to help you out:

1. Clutter? Remove it, including dead plants, forgotten piles.

2. Doors and entrances? They should be well maintained and open easily and fully.

3. Windows? They should be clean and in excellent operation.

4. Plumbing and electric? Correct all leaks and malfunctioning electrical outlets.

5. Furniture? It should be clean and in excellent condition

6. Visual cues? Uplifting and inspiring.

What you, your employees, and customers see does matter. More important is how everyone feels when they spend time in this space. Your body reads the subtle cues that can support your efforts or detract from what you and your business are all about. Spaces that are in good shape contribute positive and supportive energy to your business. Spaces that are unkempt, cluttered, or in varying degrees of disarray are spaces where everyone has to work harder to make things happen.

Two weeks ago I wrote about an Executive Director of a nonprofit agency who cleaned her office and attracted a much-needed grant. Recently she informed me that a second grant, considerably larger than the first, has also come in. Prior to this she and her organization were struggling to stay afloat. If you would like to improve your business, suspend any disbelief and re-vitalize your office space, either all at once or a sector at a time. Then refocus your attention and notice what happens. Things will shift; most likely for the better.

If you’d like your business to shift even more, make it a company priority. Select a day and direct everyone to toss out, repair, recycle, or re-purpose, everything they no longer use or need. Provide trash cans and recycle containers. Friday’s are great for this, enabling everyone to return to a refreshed, revitalized, and revitalized workspace on Monday.

Consciously Connect Your Passion To Work

20100225-balboa-park-062-2• Do you love your job?
• Have you ever loved your job?
• Do you believe you can get paid for doing work you really love?
• Would you continue to do your work even if you didn’t get paid?
• What do you love to do more than anything else in the world?

When we truly connect our passion with our work, magic happens! You are eager to jump out of bed in the morning and begin each day. You become so involved with what you are doing that time flies by; minutes turn into hours, days, weeks and months. You might get so excited that you can’t wait to share your work, discoveries or results with others.

When we love our work, we genuinely feel good. We tend to be healthier and happier, and life flows seamlessly for us. Our creativity is enhanced, relationships are supportive, and obstacles are more easily resolved.

From a feng shui perspective, your space mirrors your inner self. The patterns of how you feel about yourself and the events in your life are reflected in your home, your office and wherever you spend a lot of time. If you would like to get a job, do work that is more fulfilling, or connect with your deep inner passion, energizing the Career gua or sector of your space can bring momentum to this area of your life.

The Life Path or Career area is the front center of every space when you overlay a tic-tac-toe grid of 9 blocks over the entire area. The area can be your land, your house, your office, your master bedroom, home office, or any room in your house. It can also be your desktop, your car or wherever you are.

How does the Career sector of your home look and feel? What kind of shape is it in? To shift the energy, give the area a thorough cleaning. Make sure that everything is in great working order and is clutter-free. Then enhance this area with anything that reminds you of your path in life or what you’d love to do. If you are not sure of what you’d like to do, enhance the space with something that creates a sense of flow.

The Career area is energized by the Water element. Including water or pictures that have water in them, the color black, mirrors or glass, shiny or shimmery fabrics can be very helpful. You can also add some metal objects, the colors white or gray and round or oval shapes. Be open to the possibility that things are shifting behind the scene or under the surface. After you plant the seeds of change, nurture them as they take root and develop. If you disturb or upset them while they are still forming roots, you have to begin all over again.

The Career gua correlates your front door, if it is centrally located. Even if your front door is positioned to the left or right, make sure it is in good shape. Clean it thoroughly and perhaps freshen it with a coat of paint. A beautiful walkway leading to your front door is very supportive. The doorbell and lights should be working. Your door should open easily and fully. As you enter your home, a circular or oval mat is a wonderful landing spot. Once inside, create a focal point that captures your attention and draws you into the house. The focal point could be a beautiful path, a sailing ship, an image that evokes how you would feel living your dream or anything that you find delightful and lifts your spirits.

As you work with the Career gua of your home or office with positive intention, open to the possibility that you can connect your passion and your work, helping you to live a life you love. Many people are doing this currently. With focus, attention and positive action, you can too.

Cultivate Mindfulness Through the I Ching

20100225-balboa-park-053-2

Water Meditation © Jack Donahue

Much of feng shui’s foundational information is rooted in the I Ching, one of the oldest books from China. During the month of April, 2012 you can enjoy a daily I Ching reading on the Feng Shui Connections website and Facebook page. Reflecting on the meaning of the daily hexagrams is an excellent way of connecting with current energies, noticing patterns, being mindful and learning how to “go with the flow.” I hope you find them helpful.

The I Ching is an observation of human behavior and the constantly changing structure of the universe.  It is about the way things are at the moment and the way they tend to change and transform themselves.  The concepts of the I Ching are known as Taoism and the symbols are incorporated into the feng shui bagua.

Also known as The Book of Changes, the I Ching took its final form During the Chou Dynasty (1150-249 B.C.), a few centuries before Christ. It has remained virtually unchanged to the present day. The I Ching is really a philosophical system that incorporates mathematics and quantum physics. It consists of 64 hexagrams (6 line structures) that are a combination of a solid line (——) and a broken line (– – -).  The 64 hexagrams display every possible combination of the solid and broken lines when they are combined in sets of 6 (since 26 = 64).  Each of the 64 hexagrams is accompanied by ancient texts and commentaries that relate to 64 typical human situations.  There can be thousands of variations due to changing lines.

One of the things I find amazing about the I Ching is that it led Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the 17th century father of calculus, to discover a functioning binary system.  Leibniz discovered that if you substitute 0 for each solid line and 1 for each broken line, and then take the hexagram in order and read from bottom to top, you get the sequences 000000, 000001, 000010, 000011, etc.  This is the binary notation for the numbers 1 to 63.  This is the same mathematical system that is the basis of all computers. Mathematicians have been unable to unlock the code that generates the order of the odd-numbered hexagrams.

The Tao is known as The Way, The Path, The Flow, etc.  It is the underlying concept of feng shui.  The circle of the yin and yang represents wholeness or unity.  Yin and yang are opposites that flow into each other. One is never without the other. The Tao is about change and connecting with nature. One way to experience the Tao is to take a walk and tune into everything around you. All your senses will be activated and you will begin to feel the flow of nature all around you. There is no clear cut definition about where yin and yang begin and end. Everything is always relative. Nothing is always yin and nothing is always yang.  Feng shui brings balance to both … yin being inward and receptive; yang being outward and creative.

Tai Chi SymbolYin and yang energies are represent the duality of everything in the universe. A broken line (- – -) represents yin energy and a solid line (——) represents yang energy.  When they are combined in sets of three, they represent the eight trigrams of the bagua.

Trigrams are eight three-line structures that are the basis of the 64 hexagrams (23 = 8 and 82 = 64).  Each of the eight structures represents eight basic elemental forces, or energies, in nature.  These eight energies form the foundation of the bagua. The eight energies are: Water, Mountain, Thunder, Wind, Fire, Earth, Lake, and Heaven.

There are numerous I Ching books. Although the interpretations vary, underlying message is the same. The source I am using this month is The Illustrated I Ching, R.L. Wing.

Each day you can reflect on the meaning of the daily hexagram in your life. Leave a comment below if you’d like to share any thoughts or patterns that you notice.

How Your Home Influences Business

As more and more people work from home, the quality of energy in your home has a direct impact on your business. If you are in business for yourself and you’d like your business to grow, shifting the energy in your home may facilitate the changes you desire.

I consulted with a local yoga instructor in her home about a year ago and made a series of recommendations. Some of the changes were simple and others have required time, money and effort. One of the things this instructor has noticed is that every time she makes a change in her home, her business expands. Over the past year she has: brought attention to her front door; thoroughly cleaned her sun room; been continually clearing the basement of excess possessions;  thinned out and cleaned her office; and painted her kitchen. That’s a lot to do while raising a family, running a business and being an active participant in the community.

Done one at a time, there is nothing remarkable about each change. They are rather ordinary things to do. Stepping back and observing the process strategically, however, she has noticed that her business expanded with each change and she is experiencing more synchronicity. This is what we refer to as “ease and flow.” You make a mundane change and things “just happen.”  They happen more frequently, however, when we tune in and actually notice them vs. taking them for granted. Whatever we notice, we activate, energize, and empower.

In this particular house the front door falls within the Career sector of the feng shui bagua, so bringing active energy to the front door is very helpful. She attracted beneficial energy to her front door by painting her house number above the front door and by keeping her front walkway clear throughout the four seasons. When you have snow in winter, it is particularly important to keep the front walkway and door clear of snow and ice.

Her sun room, located in the back of the house and opposite the front door, is located in the Fame and Reputation sector of the bagua. The attention she gave to this area complemented the Career gua (because they are opposite each other) and strengthened her visibility in the community and over the web.

Her office, located in the Helpful People and Travel gua, speaks for itself. Offices function best when they are well organized, free of clutter and arranged in a comfortable manner. Investing a weekend to clean the office was well worth her time and magnetized her ability to attract more helpful people (her clients and students) easily and effortlessly.

Although basements are out of sight on a daily basis, they are very important as they represent our foundation. A basement that is full of clutter represents stagnant energy. You have to work a lot harder just to make things happen.

Her kitchen is located in the Wealth and Prosperity area of her home. Although she loved the red color on the walls, energetically it represented money burning up faster than it was coming in. She recently painted the walls a beautiful green and loves the calming effect.

If you are in business for yourself, establishing and implementing a strategic plan to align the energy of your home with your business can help your business grow faster.  Contact me if you would like a 15 minute complimentary consultation about how you can strategically apply the principles of feng shui to grow your bottom line.

Clearing Clutter Attracts Grant Money

Office Before

Wealth Office Before

A month ago I consulted with the Executive Director of a nonprofit agency that depends on grants to fund its programs. Things were tight and she wanted some help attracting grant money. People and programs had been cut in recent years and the agency was facing more cuts if revenue did not materialize. She was feeling stressed about the situation. At the time, the Executive Director was occupying the Partnership area of the office suite. She has a large, wooden, executive-style desk that is in excellent condition. Her executive style chair provides solid support, as does the wall behind her. She was also sitting facing one of her favorable directions.

Wealth Office After

Wealth Office After

Meanwhile, the Wealth office was unoccupied and filled with clutter. Although the Executive Director used to be located here, she moved her office a few years ago and unconsciously seated another employee in the Wealth office.  This employee was laid off when money dried up previously. Since then the office has been used to store piles of paper, unsuccessful grant applications, office equipment that was not being used and more. The space was physically blocked with materials that were not moving the business forward and the energy felt low and chaotic. The Wealth area reflected the agency in general: stuck.

I recommended that the Wealth office be cleared of all clutter and for the Executive Director to re-occupy it.  It was a simple change with a profound result. One grant has since been confirmed and she will learn the final amount for another one next week. With revenue flowing again she is also feeling more confident. In the coming weeks she will prepare a strategic plan for her agency, which will include attracting a grant writer.

Take a look at the before and after photos.  What a difference clearing clutter can make! Which space would you prefer to occupy?

Are the incoming grants a mere coincidence? Maybe, but probably not. In my experience,  setting an intention, believing it can happen, and taking inspired action to move you forward is a model for successful outcomes.

Do you have a similar story or experience? If so, send it along! I’d love to hear it.

Embracing Change Through The Front Door

Front Door Before Remodel

Current Front Entrance

Today my front entrance is being remodeled. From a feng shui perspective, this project will directly influence change in my life. The front door is the most important part of every building. Known as the “mouth of chi,” it represents the quality of energy that comes to you and everyone living or working in the space. If your front door is centrally located, as mine is, it also influences your career and the work you do. Since my husband and I are both self employed and work from home offices, the quality of energy at our front door has a significant impact on our lives.

I find it amazing how the shifts at our front door have correlated with transitions in my career. The day we moved to this house, nearly 30 years ago, I was surprised with a promotion at work. My bigger house with a center front entrance paralleled my increased responsibilities and larger paycheck. Looking back, my expansion at work was reflected in my expansion at home.

Original Front Door

Original Front Entrance

After a very successful 21 year career, I left that company in 2000. I intended to take six months off and simply get another job. My husband was a full-time dad for our seven year-old daughter and I was the bread-winner. One thing led to another and I studied feng shui, energy, and consciousness, and chose self employment in this field. As my feng shui career got underway we renovated our main entrance. It was dark and we wanted more light. We moved the front door forward and created a larger and brighter foyer. Keeping the original door, we replaced the door frame, added sidelights and exterior trim. We also replaced our original brick steps, which required annual maintenance, with granite that easily stands up to Mother Nature. For the past 10 years we have loved the additional light and space in our foyer, as well as the expansive and solid steps. My career has also been very successful. Additional opportunities came my way and I co-founded two additional businesses in addition to Feng Shui Connections.

Fast forward to 2012 and change is underway again. As I prepare to shift my career into a third phase, we find ourselves remodeling our front door. This time we are replacing the original door and door frame with a new unit that will withstand our New England winters. The sidelights will be a bit narrower and we’ll replace the “ram’s head” above the door with one that is traditional for our saltbox style. On a synchronous note, the design changes are reflective of some career choices I am making as well. In recent months I have been narrowing my focus in order to take my work to the mainstream. Part of this shift includes teaching business management classes at the university level, beginning in June.

With our daughter nicely settled into college, I am embracing the changes in my life and the changes at our front door. This area of our house needed some attention and it just happens to coincide with the energy of career and opportunities. It’s very nice synchronicity that last week’s March 22 new moon was associated with the energy of career and new beginnings. The new moon each month provides an opportunity to plant “seeds of intention” and to take inspired action accordingly. Our renovations will be complete before the April 6 full moon. Full moon periods are a time when we begin to see the results of our intentions and efforts. I love how everything is connected and how spaces continually reflect patterns in our lives, whether we are aware of it or not.

How is the energy at the front door of your home or business and how has it shifted over the years? If you have a center front entrance, your door correlates with your career. If your front door is located to the left, the energy correlates with self-knowledge, self-understanding and wisdom. If your front door is located to the right side of your house, the energy is associated with the helpful people in your life. It may also reflect travel. If you would like to embrace change through your front door, refresh the energy with some seasonal shifts. This might include a fresh coat of paint, new light bulbs, a new doorbell, sweeping the walkway, planting fresh flowers or shrubs, hanging a flag or even a wind chime. Whatever you do, welcome change this spring and all that it brings.

I’d love to hear comments or reflections you’d like to share.
